Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – By J.K. Rowling
STOP! DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE BEFORE READING THE BOOK!
The best advise I can give any potterhead out there, is simply, read the book first. As those of us who group up with the Harry Potter books will know, the movies ruined the amazing world we created in our heads growing up reading these books. The same goes for the Fantastic Beasts series…but this time I was prepared. With the screenplay and the movie coming out on the same day, I rushed to the bookstore on my lunch break eager to head home and start reading. When I got home that night, I unplugged from all social media, brewed myself a cup of tea, and curled up in front of the fireplace to read. This was my Friday night. A Friday night back in the wizarding world… and it was completely amazing!
Now being a screenplay, it took a bit to start painting the picture of the world and characters in my mind, but by the time Newt was in the bank chasing down the Niffler, everything started coming together. And honestly, after The Cursed Child and Fantastic Beast, I am really starting to dig the screenplays. So, J.K. Rowling pretty much nailed it again. There is not a single character in Fantastic Beasts that i didn’t enjoy. I mean, lets be real Jacob was my favorite with Newt following as a close second. I LOVED to get to experience the wizarding battles alongside the typical ‘Harry, Ron, Hermione style shenanigans’ again through Newt, Jacob, Tina, and Queenie in J.K. Rowling’s new American wizarding world. Also, I have so many beasts to learn start learning about, I am going to be fangirling hard over them for the next few months. And OMG, Pickett!!!
One quick rant…. when I bought this book the girl who worked at Barnes and Noble was telling me that I needed to see the movie before reading the book because otherwise I wasn’t going to be able to picture whats in the suitcase. I have some words for this lady. First, do you even read bro? Clearly she lacks all imagination, because let me tell you, Newt’s suitcase was a THOUSAND times better in my mind then the movie. Second, no one ever goes around saying ‘the movie was better then the book’. #SaidNoOneEver! Third, it was Friday morning, the day of the release, so clearly you couldn’t have even seen the movie yet. UGH. Some peoples children.
