The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

girl on a train

SYNOPSIS

A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people’s lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

Compulsively readable, The Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut.

REVIEW

First off – I CAN NOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE TO COME OUT! 90% of the time I am disappointed in movie remakes, but I feel like this one could be really good – like Gone Girl status good. We have to wait though; they casted Emily Blunt as the lead role and she is pregnant so filming got put on hold…

About the Book – I will try not to spoil:

The lead narrator, Rachel is absolutely crazy for sure, but so easy to love and connect with. I found myself feeling bad for her and wanting to go to her place with pizza and a bottle of wine and just hang out. This girl finds herself obsessed with this couple she doesn’t even know. She sees their apartment (and in turn them) from the train every morning and evening on her commute. She makes up a story about their life in her head, and even gives them names. Well obviously, we eventually find out who these people really are and their actual stories, but Rachel gets overly involved in an awkward manner to and awkward case.. and sh** gets crazy!

It’s a mystery though out.. The girl from the relationship Rachel watches (Jess/Megan) goes missing – and EVERYONE in the story looks so guilty yet so innocent at the same time. You think you know what probably happened, and then you don’t. And then you think you know again, and then WTF – NO WAY.. Yeah, that’s how it goes. It makes you think on so many levels. I would find myself wondering about my neighbors and their lives a little more and contemplating the small and crazy world we really do live in. Also, it made me think about how everyone has that person they think has the perfect life, the perfect family, and the perfect everything – but odds are they aren’t perfect behind closed doors. YOU might even be that “perfect life” person to someone else and not even know..

To say the least – the book is a roller coaster that keeps your interest 100% the whole time. You find yourself thinking a lot harder then you planned, and feeling emotionally involved in the case yourself even though “it’s just a book”. I highly recommend a read BEFORE the movie comes out so you don’t end up cheating yourself and just watching the movie 😉
