SYNOPSIS

Finley O’Connell is a shy, reserved college student, who has no intention of ever trusting another man. At nineteen, Finley spends her Friday nights alone, studying clinical psychology to ease her mind of the abusive childhood she has yet to overcome. Her new professor, the young, charismatic Cabel Jones, begins to take an interest in Finley, whose first instinct is to run. But when an ordinary experiment turns to bloodshed, Finley must rely on Cabel, as the two hide away in a rustic, secluded cabin in the wilderness. Plagued by deception and fear, Finley soon finds herself in the arms of the one man on campus who can never truly be hers.”

REVIEW

I am not a fan of New Adult Fiction. It’s not my cup of tea. I find them to be full of tropes that I don’t find progress character development or plot lines. New Adult books do have sexual scenes in them, but that doesn’t bother me too much as I am a mature adult and candle handle it. I tried not letting my feelings for New Adult novels conflict with reading this book.

The synopsis made me think there would be more of a mystery story then about a young woman pining for a man. Unfortunately, that did not happen. This book fell into the New Adult book formula pretty quickly. There was insta-love. Major insta-love. There was a part when Finley is arguing with Cabel days into their love affair, and she says she knows him and how he is. Later in the book, Cabel is cooking, and Finely says she didn’t know Cabel liked to cook. If you knew someone well, that might be one of the first things you find out about someone. Another aspect about New Adult novels I don’t like is the repetitiveness that comes a long with physical descriptors of the characters. This is usually done with the male love interest, and I understand why that literary device is used, but it gets old quick.  I lost count of how many times Cabel’s blue eyes were described.

My biggest disappointment with this book was that a promising plot was quickly dropped, and the story became all about the relationship between Finley and Cabel. Finley is a psychology major, and Cabel is a psychology professor. There were so many chances for both of them to dive into each other’s mind and their own minds, but that didn’t really happen. I don’t think this is a spoiler, but towards the beginning of the book, Finley’s psychology experiment is interrupted by people chasing Cabel and shooting at him. This conflict could have continued throughout the novel, but it really didn’t. If I read correctly, there will be a sequel to this book, so that conflict could continue there. I hope it does because that aspect of the synopsis really peaked my interest in wanting to read this book.

With all of that being said, I don’t think I could give this a fair numerical rating because it would be skewed with my bias against New Adult books. However, I think if you are someone who enjoys new adult books, I think you’d enjoy this too. The mystery aspect, even though short lived, is a nice element to the story to break up some of the focus on the relationship of Finley and Cabel. This book wasn’t as sex driven as other new adult books I’ve read, which is nice. So if you are a bit uneasy about sex, this might be a good book for you to read. I think Twilight: Breaking Dawn had more graphic sex scenes than this book.  It is also an easy and fast read. There are a few twists that will keep your interest.

Recommendation

Definitely give it a go if you like reading for entertainment and to escape for a few hours. New Adult fans will find this to be an enjoyable book and might find themselves a new author they enjoy. You can get it on your Kindle for $3.99 right now.
