last hero“In less time than it took his heart to beat, Trent turned and lunged at the major. Taking the man’s throat into his hand, he gripped hard, throwing him against the wall and lifting him off his feet. The move would have killed any man not in the Legion.

Looking at the major filled Trent with anger and hatred. The black uniform in this moment of grief represented everything he hated. Everything he hated about himself.”

Synopsis

The Last Hero opens on Captain Trent Maxwell retired from the Army and having spent 10 years living in relative mediocrity, raising his daughter with his wife, as the colony New Earth is attacked by an unknown alien race. Instantly, the pressure is on and Captain Maxwell is whisked from his family back into an intergalactic war to save Earth, and humanity itself.

Review

As a general lover of Sci-fi, I was interested to see if this novel could bring a new dimension to the old story of humans vs. aliens. I struggled through the first half of the book. It felt like many of the back stories explained too little, while other pieces of the story were gone over too much. The Captain’s relationship with his team and their journey is the major story line, but at times felt too spread out and confusing.

However, I’m very glad I stuck with the story, as last half of the book is fast-paced, intriguing and unexpected – everything that was lacking in the first portion of the book. The battles were gripping. The emotion from the characters raw, and yet relatable. You want Captain Maxwell and his Legion to win, and kick butt doing it.

Overall, I give the book 2.5 stars as is; but I feel that with a discerning editorial eye and oversight, this series could be stellar.
